Silverfish and Firebrats
SILVERFISH AND FIREBRATS - Some of their more common names are carrot shaped bugs, cigar shaped bugs, house bugs, and book bugs. They are one of the oldest and primitive insects. These bugs are not important like biting or stinging bugs or disease vectors, but they are annoying and can cause damage to book bindings, photographs, wallpaper, and labels. They attack starchy materials like glues and certain papers. They can become severe pests all over homes and facilities quickly.
BIOLOGY- They belong to the order Thysanaura. Just as their common names imply they are small ½ inch carrot or cigar shaped, fast moving, wingless insects with long antennae that stick almost straight out front, plus they have three long appendages (they look like thicker antennae) sticking out their posterior (back) end. Silverfish, as the name suggests, are uniform glistening silver in color whereas the firebrat is browner to gray and mottled with dark markings. They go through little or no metamorphosis and the young look much like the adults. It only takes about 12 weeks to go from egg to adult. Silverfish tend to like damp locations like bathrooms and firebrats like hot, dry places such as behind stoves and around fireplaces. They both will be found where you store things. People will often find them in their stored boxes of decorations when they pull them out.
CONTROL - To control silverfish and firebrats you do the same things as you would do for roaches mostly. Control can be achieved using baits such as Maxforce Granular Bait or Niban FG Granular bait. These are especially useful in attics. Residual insecticides such as Onslaught, Evercide or Conquer, Suspend SC, Demand CS, Talstar Pro, Demon WP, Cynoff WP, dusts such as EcoEXEMPT D Dust or Delta Dust, crack and crevice aerosols such as Cy-Kick, Invader, Intruder, and PT-565 Plus XLO. You can also use environmentally friendly and safer pesticides such as EcoPCO WP-X, EcoPCO AR-X, and EcoPCO ACU. The best approach is to use a combination of products such as a bait product, an aerosol, a dust for voids, and a residual liquid.
